This two-event convention, features Dr. Ingham, one of the world’s best-known and best-loved scholars of microbiology, and covers a sweeping overview of soil ecology and how you can support and enhance it to achieve healthy plants and bumper crops!
The event will be held at the Groundswell Network Community Greenhouse and Permaculture Garden in Invermere, BC.
Thursday, Sept 17th, 6 pm – 9 pm
The Convention opens in the High School Theater adjacent to our Greenhouse, with Dr. Ingham’s 3-hour public presentation, which weaves together the following topics:
- “Life in the Soil” delves into the hidden relationships between soil organisms, soil chemistry, and plant needs and nutrients: how does an underground ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and mycorrhizal fungi support the health (or otherwise) of plants.
- “The Composition of Compost” introduces the rules for foolproof composting, and the difference between living, biologically rich aerobic compost versus potentially harmful anaerobic waste reduction (a.k.a. a “rot pile”).
- “A Sneak Peek at Soil in the Scope”. Watch as Dr. Ingham projects pictures from her lab’s light microscope through her laptop. Identify cellular-level organisms in their native habitat and discover the important roles they play in creating – or damaging – the soil ecology.
Whether you have leafy-green or dead-black thumbs, whether you’re maintaining a golf course or starting your very own food forest, Dr. Ingham’s presentations provide the foolproof key to achieving lush green spaces, healthy plants, and abundant harvests: teaming up with the right soil microbes and creating the conditions in which they will thrive.
Friday, Sept 18th, 8:30 am – 6 pm
In a full day of soil and permaculture workshops, a select group of five regional permaculture experts and teachers showcase their lessons throughout Groundswell’s growing permaculture demonstration campus. In a conference-style format of parallel streams, you’ll have a choice of soil and permaculture related topics such as:
- Building healthy soil
- Composting with worms
- Compost Extract
- Designing a passive solar greenhouse
- Food forest design
- Rainwater harvesting
- and more….
