The West Kootenay Permaculture Co-op is committed to aiding our community in building resiliency
... This annual event is a celebration of just that! By utilizing the fruit which is abundant in our yards, trails and ditches we are preventing bear encounters and damaged to old trees and are able to efficiently make great use of this resource. Our co-op is proud to host our friends from Fields Forward new initiative; the Kootenay Mobile Press which operates a extremely high volume value processing service that presses pasteurizes and packages fresh juice in to shelf stable boxes which require no refrigeration and will keep juice fresh for upto 1 year! This service is available to commercial orchards and very large events like ours, last year we pressed 14000 lbs of fruit in 10 hours!
Our co-op makes space for juice to happen, and welcome all community to participate. If you have a tote bin of apples or two truck loads full you can come make juice. If you have no fruit trees you can join a glean team and get involved in harvesting before the festivities, or you can just come for the party and buy some juice from Kootenay Food (this is our own fundraising project) and enjoy the day!
Due to the high volume of our annual community pressing we are able to offer the community direct the great per liter rates for the service we get. We do not mark up the service for profit. What makes this day a success in our minds is community coming out to celebrate together and stock their pantries with juice!
This epic annual community juicing event returns to Slocan Park Hall this September 30 for a SUNDAY-FUN-DAY you don't want to miss. Last year over 500 people came out to take in all the events of the day, expect bigger and better offerings this year!
LIVE MUSIC - FOOD - BORSCHT - VENDORS - KIDS ACTIVITIES + GAMES + JUICE!
THIS YEAR WE ARE EXTENDING OUR PRESSING SERVICE INTO A 2 DAY EVENT...
In an effort to speed up juice pick up times we are hosting 2 days of juicing (but only 1 day of event festivities), we aim to process all large volume producers the day before the big community event to allow for quicker turn around of smaller batches based on the success of last year.
BIG BATCH PRESSING ONLY -
SATURDAY SEPT 29
If you are a large homestead / community group / school or farm you can come a day early to the large volume pressing on Saturday September 29th between 10-4.
If you have more than a full size pick up truck load of apples and pears then plan to come on Saturday for quicker service. Remember we can only press handpicked non bruised non molding fruit. Windfall will NOT be processed. If you are a Certified Organic Farm (with a KOGS number) we will be doing an early AM certificated Organic Run, you can access for no addition fee, but you do need to register.
